Abstract

Catalogue essay on the British artist Katerina Jebb, to accompany a major exhibition held in Arles, France, in 2016. Jebb has invented a new photographic technique in which she uses the very shallow depth of field of commercial scanners to make studies which challenge the transparency of photography. The retrospective exhibition and Hodgson's essay covered a number of years of Jebb's practice, on the border between commercial fashion and artistic expression. The essay looks at her engagement with contemporary feminist representation and concentrates in particular on Jebb's building of a strong body of work in portraiture.
