Dr Uschi Klein's current research focuses on photography as a form of cultural resistance in communist Romania (1947-1989). Her research is contextualised within the broader understanding of decolonising the Western photography canon to broaden the knowledge by including marginalised and under-represented perspectives. Uschi's recent publications include an open-access article in the journal Miejsce, a chapter in the volume The Camera as Actor (Routledge 2020) and articles in academic journals, such as Visual Studies (2021) and Visual Communication (2020).
Dr Uschi Klein is interested in supervising PhDs in the broad areas of photographic histories and practices, visual and material culture, resistance politics, cultural memory and marginalised communities. She is especially but not exclusively interested in supervising research projects that focus on the lived experience of Eastern European totalitarian systems.
Dr Uschi Klein studied media studies and linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, where she lived and (following her degree) worked as a media advisor in the charity sector. After relocating to London in 2010, Uschi returned to higher education to do her master’s at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Although Uschi developed an interest in practicing photography in the early 1990s, it was not until her MA that she formally studied photography. It was also halfway through her MA that Uschi decided to do a PhD and start an academic career. Dr Klein's critique of the charity sector, in specific its use of imagery, led to her PhD thesis entitled Seeing self and world: everyday photographic practices of young male adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which she completed at University of Brighton in late 2017.
In 2020, as a result of pure serendipity and a personal interest in communist Romania, Uschi started exploring vernacular photography as a form of cultural resistance during Romania's communist era (1947-1989). In 2020 and 2021, Uschi won two small international research grants, the Peter E. Palmquist Memorial Fund Research Grant and the 10x10 Research Grant on Photobook History, respectively. The grants enabled her to carry out initial archival research in Bucharest, Romania, which resulted in an open-access publication and two international conference papers.
Uschi includes her research into her teaching and delivers research-informed teaching to engage students with their learning material. Uschi is also deeply committed to decolonising the curriculum and uses post-colonial and decolonial scholarship at the centre of her teaching to introduce students to approaches and practices from the Global South.
In 2021, Uschi completed the PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Deeply committed to decolonising the curriculum, Uschi focused her PGCert research on developing strategies to decolonise the photography and art history curriculum through changes in course structure that place colonial scholarship into dialogue with emerging scholarship. Uschi is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).
