Research interests

Stewart’s primary research interest is child health, with a particular interest in the manifestation and impact of musculoskeletal foot and ankle problems in children.  Stewart is currently co-leading a funded, five year research programme (Great Foundations) which is looking to advance understanding about the development of children’s feet in infancy and early childhood. Stewart combines vast clinical, research and academic interests in this area and has experience of employing various health technologies to pursue advances in the understanding and clinical management of foot and ankle problems in children.  He was recently awarded a BACD-Castang Fellowship related to his work exploring foot and ankle problems in children with disabilities. 

Stewart also has interests in human movement and is involved in work looking at the impact of running footwear on foot and lower limb biomechanics. He was also involved in a multi-centre study looking at the role of foot and ankle impairments as predictors of mobility and balance problems in stroke survivors.

Scholarly biography

Stewart is a Reader within the School of Health Sciences.  He was awarded his PhD from Glasgow Caledonian University and has a PgCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.  Stewart is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the College of Podiatry.  He is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Supervisory Interests

Stewart has an interest in the paediatric foot and his work is pursuing advances in the understanding and clinical management of foot and ankle problems in children.  He has experience of multi-methods research and is currently supervising two PhD students.  This current work is combining sophisticated motion capture and three-dimensional scanning technologies to advance understanding of foot development across childhood.  Past PhD candidates that have worked with Stewart have completed work in childhood obesity, footwear biomechanics, and foot and ankle impairments following stroke.
