Personal profile
Research interests
Natalie combines epidemiological methods for health services research with a critical approach and qualitative methods. Her interests include the interface between sexual and reproductive health with psychosocial issues, public health, community delivery of sexual health interventions, Point of Care Testing for STIs, problematic substance use and anti-microbial resistance (AMR). Methodologically she is interested in screening tool development, clinical prediction modelling, development and evaluation of complex interventions, the evaluation of public involvement in research, and researching disenfranchised populations. Natalie has been developing a critical epidemiology approach to sexual health research and more recently Trauma and Resilience Informed Reearch Principles and Practice (TRIRPP). You can read more about TRIRPP here http://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/trirpp/.
Scholarly biography
Natalie joined the University of Brighton as a senior research fellow in 2006 and has since been an applicant on several successful grants awards, on a range of topics, collaborating with UCL, University of Sussex, LSHTM and local non-statutory providers. She is a member of the NIHR PPI Impact Working Group and has previously been Public Involvement Expert Lead for the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit hosted by University College London, and Public Involvement Lead for the NIHR Research Design Service South East, with whom she also worked as a research adviser and as Continuing Professional Development Lead.
Approach to teaching
Natalie teaches research ethics concerning ‘hard-to-reach’ and ‘vulnerable’ populations, research design, and a range of research methods. She encourages a classroom environment where students can question and debate issues and scenarios. Her aim is to build confidence and critical thinking as well as subject expertise.
Supervisory Interests
Natalie has experience in supervising qualitative and quantitative research projects, as well as systematic reviews. She is particularly interested in supervising post-graduate research in sexual and reproductive health and drug use, development of clinical prediction models and complex interventions, and studies working with disenfranchised populations. Natalie also has expertise in study designs that bring criticality to quantitative approaches and which embed a meaningful degree of patient and public involvement throughout the research process.
