Marias D'Avolio

In the last five years I have developed an interdisciplinary theoretical and practical experience in conducting social research throughout my PhD, my MSc in Social Research Methods and my roles as Research Assistant in various institutions, including King’s College London, University of Sussex and University of Portsmouth. My research approach is aimed at analysing intersecting inequalities in various contexts and at developing innovative perspectives around forms of social, urban and environmental harm from a feminist and gendered approach. I am interested in Green Criminology and in exploring how issues of environmental justice are linked to broader aspects of urban geography. I am also interested in exploring these issues through a zemiological and intersectional approach. My interdisciplinary research interests include various criminological and sociological theories, including cultural and critical criminology, Marxist feminism, and zemilogy.

I have cultivated an interdisciplinary background obtained from an educational and professional experience in Architecture together with a training and experience in Sociology and Social Sciences. I have completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Sussex, where I have also obtained a MSc in Social Research Methods in 2015. Previously, I obtained my degree in Architecture from the University of Florence (Italy) in 2011 and I fully qualified to practice the profession. I have teaching experience on various cohorts in two different institutions, the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex, where I have been teaching Sociology, Criminology and Gender Studies modules since 2016. I have joined the School of Applied Social Science as a Lecturer in Criminology in 2020.

I am committed to offering students interdisciplinary research-informed teaching and engaging and inclusive learning environments through the employment of different strategies of interactions, such as discussions in pairs, group works, class debates, individual presentations, and critical analysis of texts, blog articles and online videos. My main role as tutor is to support and encourage students in gaining confidence in discussing topics of general sociological and criminological interest, thus developing their critical thinking.  I am reflexive of my teaching approaches and committed in keeping students' well-being and inclusion at the centre of my teaching.
