Personal profile

Research interests

Julian's current interests involve business sustainability from the six-point perspective (financial, social, intellectual, human, manufacturing, and environmental), social capital, value creation and strategy all within the UN sustainable development goals framework.

Julian also has research experience in informal economies in developing and developed countries.

Supervisory Interests

Julian is keen on supervising research in the field of business sustainability, SMEs, social capital, value creation, entrepreneurship, and strategy with the aim to contribute to the UN sustainable development goals framework.

Julian has supervised a number of undergraduate theses as well as business plans part of graduation requirements.

Approach to teaching

Julian's teaching activity spans across different levels from first year undergraduate (level 4) to master's students (level 7) and also in different subjects such as strategy, entrepreneurship, research methods, and international business. He earned the status of 'Fellow' in the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2019.

His lectures are usually developed with an interactive mindset where theory is examined, then discussion and idea-generation time is given to either contribute, expand and or contradict preset conceptions in the theory. Seminars are mostly student-centered where participants are able to engage in different activities either to watch a video, work on a set of questions based on a case study or group work with more complex tasks where students learn from, with and through others.

Julian's sessions require preparation, self-study, and commitment. It is expected to see motivation and willingness to participate, from students.

Knowledge exchange

Julian has worked in higher education for over eleven years teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students.

Julian has been a member of the British Academy of Management (BAM) for over five years, and a co-chair for the special interest group: Sustainable and Responsible Business Track since 2019 where he has supported the peer-review process for three conferences BAM 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Julian has presented several papers at BAM as well as EGOS conferences whilst also joining the doctoral symposium events at BAM. Also, presented papers at the Management Knowledge and Education Conference (MKE) part of BAM.

Julian is also an external examiner for University of Brighton.

Julian and two more colleagues earned a best-paper award for the publication: Social Capital, The Lesser-Known Victim of Crime in Bogota – Colombia), for the Public Management and Governance Track at The British Academy of Management BAM2020 Conference. 2-4 September. Manchester, UK.
