Personal profile

Research interests

Jo is a visual artist and designer who's practice and research is concerned with communication, collaboration and engagement and how inclusive arts strategies can connect people from diverse backgrounds.

Approach to teaching

Jo is a Senior Lecturer teaching Inclusive Arts Practice MA/PgCert/PgDip. This course creates radically new forms of collaboration between students and excluded community groups from around the world. Jo is personal tutor, research supervisor and module lead for both the professional development module 'Looking Ahead' and the module 'Ways of Working' which introduces students to contextural theoretical knowledge alongside practical workshops with the learning-disabled Rocket Artist group.

Jo supports postgraduate students to develop, deliver and evaluate ethically sound and achievable inclusive arts projects with vulnerable, marginalised or excluded community groups such as those experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, learning disabilities, displacement (refugees) and dementia carers.
She has developed teaching and learning strategies that support students to identify, pursue and create dynamic professional development career paths for themselves. For example, MA IAP graduates have successfully gained employment with arts organisations and galleries such as Towner gallery Eastbourne and Fabrica Gallery Brighton, while others have set up their own enterprises to support themselves and their communities.

As well as beng active in this teaching role Jo has been acting course leader (Feb 2018 - Jan 2019), is a mentor on the Fine Art Programme post-grad Mentoring module and has developed and facilitated level 5 Option modules in Inclusive Arts Practice.
