Scholarly biography

Jason Hooker is a post-graduate research student at the University of Brighton

A graduate from the University of Brighton, Jason started his foundation year in 2015 and finished his MEng in Aeronautical Engineering with first-class honours in 2020. With a key interest in the topic’s fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, Jason pursued projects with these subjects as the key themes throughout his degree. For his third-year project, Jason focused on the cooling of machine tools using a temperature stratification created from subsonic and supersonic flows in a co-axial system. For his MEng major team project, Jason and his colleagues used an expander focused approach to optimise and commission a heat recovery system in the kilowatt scale, where he led efforts in CFD studies.

Jason also assessed the feasibility in using ammonia as a fuel for large scale marine engines by conducting a literature review on current and previous studies which all focused on the combustion of ammonia as part of his MEng individual study project. He is currently continuing the theme of this study by researching ammonia as a fuel for combustion in large scale marine engines using a combustion focused approach, under the supervison of Dr Angad Panesar, Dr Penny Atkins and Professor Robert Morgan

Research interests

My research interests mainly focus on thermal propulsion systems, particularly on sustainable fuels and how they can be used to achieve high efficiencies and low emissions in existing and advanced engine cycles. In addition to this, I also have a keen interest in waste heat recovery systems and thermal management.
