Research interests

Dr. Platsas is an academic expert in the fields of comparative law and international law.  He has also written extensively in the fields of European law, business law and legal theory.  Antonios has also a keen research interest in the field of legal education and how such a type of education can serve the needs of modern society.

He has previously completed a monograph entitled The Harmonisation of National Legal Systems: Strategic Models and Factors (2017), in which theoretical models and factors for the harmonisation of legal systems are explored in detail. In this work, he acknowledges the significance of comparative and socio-legal factors and presents harmonisation as a widely applicable and useful theory.

One of Antonios' major ongoing research projects relates to the idea of cosmopolitanism in modern constitutional law and the ever increasing effect of such an idea on human rights law and constitutional law.

Approach to teaching

Dr. Platsas' pedagogy combines the doctrinal approach and the Socratic approach.  His teaching approach can thus be described as hybrid, it being doctrinal in the main and Socratic to a lesser extent.

Antonios is a firm believer in a cosmopolitan type of legal education.  This type of education defines his teaching philosophy in research terms and in actual didactic terms.  Echoing the calls and the ideal of liberal education, his approach ultimately stands for an interdisciplinary type of legal education making considerable inroads for economics, political and social science perspectives in the teaching and learning of law.  When it comes to positively influencing student body in the teaching and learning process, the view Dr. Platsas traditionally took as an academic was one, which would allow students to flourish in their studies by enabling their operations.  He does so by the introduction of novel models of teaching and learning, models which would allow student body to expand on cognitive matter that he would previously deliver to them.

Supervisory Interests

Antonios would be delighted to supervise students in the areas of his research interests, namely Comparative Law, International Law, Commercial Law, European Law and Legal Theory.  He holds experience in supervising PhD projects to completion in the MPhil/PhD register, whilst he has also examined PhD work internally and externally.
