The Mathematical Sciences Research and Enterprise Group has a focus on the development and the application of mathematical techniques for solving real world problems, which necessitates connections with other disciplines. Our expertise covers numerical methods, discrete mathematics, topology, theoretical and applied statistics. We collaborate with many UK and international academic institutes (e.g. University of Liverpool, UK and University of Montepellier, France) and industrial partners (e.g. Hurstwood Park Neuroscience Centre and Southern Water, UK).
The main research themes are Computational Methods (CM), Discrete Mathematics (DM) and Statistics (S). CM focuses on numerical methods for problems in applied mathematics and engineering, with applications including modelling the sound field radiated from a loudspeaker and the formation and growth of cavities in the spinal cord. DM focuses on the development and application of discrete mathematical techniques, particularly applied within computer science, including applications to visual logics to assist human reasoning, information visualisation and diagram generation algorithms, efficient knot detection methods with biological applications. S interests range from theoretical probability to applied statistics and rigorous machine learning, including statistical methodologies for analysing big data, marginal regression models with correlated discrete response variables, theoretical analysis of online prediction models and applied topological data analysis methods.
