DescriptionCatalina Mejia Moreno, Senior Lecturer in Architectural Humanities and Second year Coordinator presented at the Centre for Canadian Architecture (CCA) in Montreal her project ‘Lights off, projector on. First slide please,’ in the event Talking Pictures, A Circuit last Saturday October 14th, 2017. This was the final presentation of the two-year multidisciplinary research project Architecture and/for Photography funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In a slide show composed by a selection of slides from the archives of Reyner Banham, Robin Evans and Cedric Price, her installation reflects on the agency of the slide as an architectural medium that not only shaped the works of the lecturers who used it extensively in the 1970’s-1990’s, but also a way of documenting, seeing and interpreting.
Talking Pictures, A Circuit was a circuit of presentations, performances, installations, and interventions throughout the spaces of the CCA, where all scholars offered distinct micro histories of photography and architecture. Using the CCA collection as a point of departure, all eight involved scholars showed how, beyond the documentation of buildings, photography draws from new aesthetics and new technological developments to become an agent in architecture’s image culture. The other seven scholars part of the project were Davide Deriu, Reader and Director of Architectural Research at the University of Westminster; Peter Sealy, lecturer at the University of Toronto and Phd candidate at Harvard University; Reto Geiser, architect and Gus Wortham Assistant Professor at the Rice University School of Architecture; Sara Goldsmith, writer and editor at Laurence King Publishing; Bas Princen, Artist and Photographer working in Rotterdam and Zurich; Mika Savela, architect, curator and chief editor of the Finish Architectural Review; Francesca Russell Ammon, Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning and Historic Preservation at the University of Pennsylvania; and lastly Phyllis Lambert, Founding Director Emeritus of the CCA.
